The Reluctant WAG by Mary Costello: Review

April 19, 2013 Reviews 0

cover29465-mediumWhen model Merise Merrick is asked to star in a campaign for the Yarraside Football Club, she couldn’t be less interested. As far as she’s concerned, football players are all overpaid jocks with zero intelligence.

AFL captain Cal McCoy is completely dedicated to the game. With a premiership firmly in his sights, he has no time for romantic distractions. The last thing he needs is an inconvenient attraction to the new ‘face’ of the club.

But Cal soon discovers that staying focused is easier said than done, while Merise finds herself falling for the excitement and power of footy – and its biggest star.

I do love a good sports romance, and I am always super excited when there is an AFL-playing hero. Unfortunately, The Reluctant WAG fell a little short for me.

This was a pretty quick read. I didn’t feel a great deal of heat being generated by this pair. Merise umm’d and aah’s a bit too much about the modelling work, study etc. and Cal was more often than not the captain not only of the footy club, but of the good ship SS Judgmental! I just didn’t really get them as a couple.

There were a few moments where I was fully expecting something exciting was going to happen and then nothing did. It’s like going up Mt Everest and stopping 1 metre from the summit – a bit of a letdown.

On the sports side of things, it fell before the line for me as well. The team names sounded a little too much like suburban lower-tier clubs and I don’t really know anyone who describes themselves as a barracker (even though my team does refer to them in their theme song – Go Pies!). I did however love one of the teams – the Point Cook Panthers. In the real world, Point Cook can barely get a regular bus service, but in this, it has an AFL team. It’s so nice to see my little corner of Melbourne get a mention.

I didn’t dislike this book, but as a passionate AFL supporter and an aficionado of sports romance, I’ve got to say there are ones I’d rather read ahead of this.

My rating: 2.5 out of 5
