It’s my great pleasure today at My Written Romance to host this next stop on the book tour for Nancy C. Weeks and her newest release, In the Shadow of Evil.
So, tell us a little bit about In the Shadow of Evil:
Elías Mendoza’s personal vendetta against the McKenzie family rests on Jennie’s shoulders. As she cradles the bullet ridden body of her ten-year old student, she knows Mendoza is responsible. Quinton’s death is a message. Jennie’s life belongs to only Mendoza. But she has her own message. No one else dies. Her life means nothing as long as Mendoza is free.
Jared McNeil has spent ten years with Maryland’s Special Crime Unit and very little rattles him. When the haunted teenager he once tried to protect walks into his precinct now a beautiful woman, he wants nothing more than to wrap her in his arms and never let her go. But he soon realizes she is there only to settle her debts before she goes after his nemesis, Mendoza. Jared’s vow to stay away from Jennie until the task force destroys Mendoza now means nothing.
What Jared and Jennie don’t understand is there are forces at play greater than the evil shadowing them, but time is running out. United, they can do anything. Alone, they will fail.
Sounds pretty interesting, eh? Here’s my review:
I was aware when I read this book that it was part of a series, and after reading In the Shadow of Evil, I am going to work my way through In the Shadow of Greed, because I think this will help me understand this title a little better.
Now, I don’t read a hell of a lot of romantic suspense, so when the opportunity to take part in this tour was presented, I jumped right in. I enjoyed the book very much, and while there were some small aspects that didn’t quite work for me, it was most definitely a worthwhile read.
The paranormal otherworldly threads woven through the story were really well done. The telepathy between Jennie and Jared, and the way in which Jennie can sense the proximity of danger, didn’t at all seem far-fetched – the way in which Nancy C. Weeks developed this gave it a realistic feel. I hadn’t been expecting this element to the story, and it was a pleasant surprise for me. The connection that Mendoza has to Jennie’s past was also definitely something I hadn’t seen coming, and when you find out what that is, you can totally get why Jennie’s desire and need to sever this connection is so very strong.
Jennie and Jared have tried to stay away from each other in the guise of trying to protect the other from the evil that Elias Mendoza is capable of visiting upon them. However the chemistry and fated pull between them is too strong, and they begin to admit their feelings for each other. On occasion, this felt a little too instalovey for me – but I can understand it because of the paranormal vibe of the story.
The secondary characters, and in particular the McNeil siblings, were really well-written and added that extra something to the story. I am looking forward, as I do with all continuing series I’ve enjoyed, to see what is in store for the remaining McNeils.
The main issue I had with the book was the ending. To me, it felt a little abrupt and maybe could have done with a little more elaboration. However, I have a feeling that the style of ending may make more sense as the series moves on.
All in all, In the Shadow of Evil is a great read – surprising, suspenseful and deeply romantic.
