I am super excited to be the next stop on the book tour for Love Waltzes In, a dance romance from the very talented Alana Albertson! Alana has been kind enough to answer some questions and to tell us all a little bit more about Love Waltzes In.
To her millions of fans, ballroom champion Selena Marcil seems to have the perfect life: a great dance partner, a hit reality show, and celebrity perks. But underneath the glamorous ball gowns, Selena longs to find someone to share her life with when the stage lights dim.
Selena’s childhood sweetheart, Bret Lord, hung up his dance shoes after winning two national titles with her as a teenager, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He never saw his former fiancée again, except on television and on the cover of men’s magazines. Ten years and three deployments later, Bret gets an offer to audition for Selena’s dance show. When the Marine Corps gives him temporary leave to appear on the series, Bret can’t refuse the quick cash that will enable him to provide financially for the widow of his buddy, even if it does mean coming face to face with his past.
When Bret shows up at her national championship, Selena is shocked. For years she searched for him to no avail. After spending time with Bret, Selena realizes despite their past romance, they have no future. He has no desire to live under a spotlight and she has no desire to leave it. Can Selena and Bret recognize when Love Waltzes In?
A few of my thoughts:
Being a person with way more enthusiasm than skill when it comes to dance, I love watching and reading about the world of performing arts. Ballroom dancing does seem to be the perfect world for a romance setting – the movement, the passion, the music.
There were a few issues for me in terms of pacing (things moved really quickly on some occasions, and a little slowly on others), however I really enjoyed the dance aspect and the romance between Selena and Bret.
It’s pretty clear that Selena and Bret share some sizzling chemistry, despite their past and their breakup. There are secrets floating about in the past, and I have to say that I was really happy about the way things worked themselves out when they came out. Bret’s reaction was understandable and valid. I won’t tell you what it is, but it was pretty big stuff.
Selena is a great character, very passionate about what she does – she is a little naïve however on occasion, and her expectations as to Bret’s reaction to the big secret were a little unreal. Other than that, I liked her. Bret has that hot Marine thing going on – muscles, tatts, honour, all that – and I like that even though he was sceptical about the show, he didn’t bitch and moan the whole time about how he had to do it.
It will be interesting to see how Alana develops Vika’s story in the next book. She was a little difficult for me, so it will be fascinating to see how she redeems her.
This is a quick, fun read, and if you are a dance fan, this could really appeal to you.
I give Love Waltzes In 3.5 out of 5.
And now for the interview:
Hi, Alana! Welcome to My Written Romance!
Can you give us the Cliff’s Notes version of what your book is about?
Love Waltzes In is the romance between a competitive ballroom dancer, Selena, and her childhood sweetheart, US Marine Bret. Bret was Selena’s childhood partner and returns for one season on the hit show Dancing under the Stars to raise money for his fallen buddy’s family.
What is it that you love about this book, and in particular your hero and heroine?
Bret is a man’s man and very strong, opinionated, and moral. He’s very disciplined and by the book. Selena is a dreamer and passionate. I love telling a romance through the ballroom dances.
What is your favourite part of the writing process? Is it creating characters, world-building or is it typing The End?
My favorite part is the world-building process. I love giving readers a glimpse into a world that may be foreign to them. I think setting and secondary characters are essential to make a book landscape come to life.
Who is your writing superhero? Why?
Wow! My undergraduate degree is in English Literature – so I love Oscar Wilde, Theodore Dreiser, Charles Chestnutt. I never read popular literature until my mid-twenties. Since then, for romance, I love Kristan Higgins. I also love Lauren Willig – and I love how her website caters to both the reader the writer. Lauren is also amazing because she convinced Yale to offer a class on romance, which she co-taught.
Outside of writing, what do you do to relax?
Well with a 3 year old and an 8 month old, I don’t have anytime to relax. I love to dance, quilt, needlepoint, scrapbook, read books, and play with my rescue dogs.
What’s next for you?
The sequel to Love Waltzes In will be released soon – Waltz on the Wild Side. And I’m so excited that The Snow Queen, a short horror Nutcracker Novella that is set in the ballet world will be release on Dec 2 as part of an anthology. The anthology will be called, Unholy Nights. It’s a group of twisted Christmas stories.
Thank you so much for stopping by My Written Romance today, Alana. It’s been wonderful chatting with you!
Now I’ve spoken with Alana and told you all what I enjoyed about the book, I think you should get hold of Love Waltzes In and find time to read it.
