Irrepressible You by Georgina Penney: Review

February 14, 2014 Reviews 1

I was first made aware of the new path that Destiny Romance is travelling along, with some new titles, a week or so ago. In addition to their gorgeous romance novels, Destiny is bringing chick-lit back to the masses. If you are one of those who thinks chick-lit and cringes…….wash your mind out with soap!

There are some wonderfully unique Australian voices on offer, and one of those voices is that of Georgina Penney, whose debut Destiny offering, Irrepressible You releases today! Happy release day to you, Georgina!

What is Irrepressible You about?

Irrepressible YouYou don’t become a notorious British celebrity without rubbing a few people the wrong way, which is why writer and comedian Ben Martindale has decamped to Australia until the latest media frenzy dies down.

When he meets Amy Blaine, a perky blonde who dresses like a 1950s pin-up girl, he knows he’s hit the satirical jackpot. He begins to fill his weekly London column with snarky observations about her life, clothes, and even their most intimate moments. It doesn’t occur to him that Amy, who is letting her guard down for the first time in her adult life, might be upset – after all, it’s hilarious, and his readers love her!

It isn’t until Amy discovers the extent of his betrayal that Ben begins to realise just how badly he’s cocked up the best thing that ever happened to him. But is it too late?

Here’s my thoughts on Irrepressible You:

When you read this book, there are times you’ll laugh, times you’ll cry and there are times when you will just want to get slappy on the hero. However, for me at all times when I read this the other day, I enjoyed every step of the journey in this fresh new take on the genre.

The romance that built between Amy and Ben was adorable. There of course is always the worry that Amy will discover what Ben has been writing. But this didn’t detract from watching these two fall in love.

Amy’s past could have easily led her down a completely different path (I’ll let you read the book to find out why – I’m not going to spoil it for you). However, Amy has built a strong life for herself in spite of her childhood. Granted, it may take her that little bit longer to put her big girl britches, but boy! When she does, it’s a thing of awesome! Her love of the 50s look is gorgeous and when you know what has brought her to embrace that, you just want to say “Yay for you, Amy!”.

Ben…Ben, you are a bit of a naughty one, aren’t you? He has a real air of self-centred over-indulgence about him (well, he does drive an Aston Martin DB9) and doesn’t seem to possess that internal filter that separates good ideas from the WTF variety. But he’s such a lovable rogue – witty and self-deprecating – so it’s not too hard to forgive him his trespasses.

I loved the way everything was described & hinted at – there is a real visual quality to Georgina Penney’s writing. Reading this brought to mind those classic romantic comedies. The dialogue is wonderful – it’s smart, sharp and very funny. I loved the supporting characters, some of whom I would love to have their own stories. However as Georgina is aware from my tweets from the day I read the book, my love for the magnificent Gerald knows no bounds. Once you encounter him in the book, I’m sure you will fall for his lazy, jowly ways too.

Irrepressible You is a fabulous debut from Ms Penney – and if this is any indication of how her writing means to continue, my Kindle is in for a workout!

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5
