Thursday Thoughts: Would You Pay $200 for a Used Paperback?

June 12, 2014 Random Acts of Reading, Thursday Thoughts 0

29770521562e4055abIt’s time for a Thursday Thought. I haven’t done one of these in a while, but I had a flash of inspiration yesterday while at the real world job.

I got to thinking, what book would you be willing to pay the big dollars for? And by the big dollars, I don’t mean the rather high book prices that we are often confronted with in Australia.

I was listening to an old DBSA Romance Fiction Podcast, and Sarah & Jane made mention of the old Nora Roberts book, Promise Me Tomorrow – this is apparently the holy grail of used romance books. You can get a copy, but only if you pay up to $200 for a copy on eBay or AbeBooks.

There’s a collectible on sale for over $500 as well on AbeBooks!

I think the most expensive book I have ever purchased was Kevyn Aucoin’s Making Faces. Yes, a book on makeup purchased by someone who rarely wears it! It was sometimes in the late 1990s, from a store in the US (not sure which one), and it was about $50 all up. That was quite a lot of money for me back then.

Pastel mounties from 1992! What's not to love? But which book would I pay the large coin for now?

Well, I have been trying for a few years to find a copy of an old school Silhouette that my sister and I had back in the day. It is called She Got Her Man, and it is by one of my romance gateway authors, Marie Ferrarella. It’s got early 90s fashion, a wolf-like dog, Mounties – total crack for my teenage self.

Look at the cover! So much pastel!

While not all my teenage favourites meet up with my adult tastes, I would love to get my hands on a copy of this one. I have scoured used bookshops and the like, but to no avail.

I’m not sure I’d be that keen to part with $200 for the privilege of owning it, as per the above Nora, but I’d definitely pay above the odds for a good copy.

What book would you part with a chunk of your hard-earned for? Are you like me, and have a early 90s piece of awesome that you are chasing?

I would love to know what you are trying to find, or if you have found your collectible, what one it was.

As always, my lovely readers, have a wonderful Thursday, and…..
